I grew up in Forest Lawn in the 70s, which wasn't exactly where the money was in Calgary back then. My parents were Polish immigrants and we didn't have much, but my mother had incredible taste and she made our little house feel warm and beautiful with almost nothing. I think that's where I got it from. I studied at ACAD and spent most of my career on high-end residential — big houses in the southwest, renovations in Mount Royal. Good money. But honestly, those clients didn't really need me. They had money to fix their mistakes.
The people I actually want to help are younger. I see what these kids are dealing with now. They're buying their first place in their mid-thirties if they're lucky, they've saved for years, and they move in with almost nothing left over. Every dollar has to count. They're not going to hire a designer. But they're also drowning in online content and half of it is contradictory and the other half is trying to sell them something.
I understand that generation better than they think I do. They've done their research. They just need someone to cut through the noise and tell them what's actually true for their specific situation, their specific room, their specific budget. That I can do. No pitch, no upsell — just an hour of honest advice from someone who's been in 500 Calgary homes.
