I came to Calgary in 1966 at the age of 11, not speaking a word of English and having to grow up fast. From a young age I worked, and when I was at university I thought I wanted to be a doctor. But during the summers I painted houses, and I made more money painting than being a doctor — plus I was my own boss. I like being independent and living with a skill I can take everywhere.
I've painted hundreds of houses and seen Calgary expand so much I don't always recognize it. It's gotten way more expensive since Covid, and even though I still work construction, it's time to find something related to painting that isn't so physical. I can't just watch TV. I still want to participate in life. That's why I like Calgary Mentors.
